| This fire broke out on the bitterly cold evening of December 16, 1835. It destroyed 20 square blocks bounded by Wall and Broad Streets, Conenties Slip and the East River. The fier was eventually contained two days later. It could be seen as far away as Philadelphia. Losses were estimated between 20 and 40 million dollars. The volume of claims forced 23 of 26 of the fire insurance companies in the city to declare bankruptcy. | |
