"At that time I was mechanical manager of the Sag Harbor Express (still going strong in its 73rd year). The storm started in the morning, increased as the day wore on. By noon it was so severe venturing out to dinner was unwise. There were five people in the office . . . . As the streets were impassable, oyster stews were ordered sent over . . . . We were located on the second floor. The storm raged violently through the afternoon. The streets were entirely deserted. Our location was on the west side of Main Street, the drift was from the east. By night the drift had reached the second story window sill . . . . When we were ready to depart at 6 o'clock we found a solid wall of snow as the lower door was opened. We had no Nautilus to go under or through-we did have two shovels. It was necessary to tunnel through for about fifteen feet, carrying the snow up stairs and throwing it out of the back windows. Making an exit . . . . our combined strength weathered the gale in an almost exhausted condition."
